THE STORY OF DEMOLAY
Read about how DeMolay became the worldwide organization it is today!

Back in 1919, while employed as the social services director for the Scottish Rite bodies in Kansas City, Missouri, Frank S. Land hired a teenager by the name of Louis Gordon Lower to perform odd jobs around the building. As the two got to know each other and eventually became friends, Land found out that
Lower’s father had passed away a short time before and that the young man missed having the guidance that a father would provide. Lower had other friends whose fathers were not in the home, whether from divorce, abandonment or death, and that these young men would also like to have an adult male they could go to for guidance. Land then suggested that Lower invite some of his friends to the Scottish Rite building to discuss starting a club for young men. Within a few days, Lower had brought 8 of his friends to a meeting. The nine young men agreed that the idea of a club for young men was a good one. Soon after that, the “Order of DeMolay” was born. Within three years of creation, DeMolay had established chapters in 39 of the then 48 states, and in the District of Columbia.

Canada’s first chapter is born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on February 24th, 1923. It started with 99 members, and was initiated by 22 members from North Dakota who traveled by train for the ceremony. The Chaplain of this group would eventually go on to become the Father of Medicare, and that young man was former N.D.P Leader Tommy Douglas.

Barrie Chapter is created under the name “Simcoe Grey York Chapter” in October of 2016, starting with 5 members and 5 advisors.

Barrie Chapter starts their community garden project, aiming to donate hundreds of pounds of fresh produce to the local Barrie Food Bank annually.

Simcoe Grey York Chapter is renamed to “Barrie Chapter” to simplify the name.

DeMolay has grown to over 25 countries worldwide, with over, 15,000 members and around 4 million volunteers as of December 2019.
